Scheduling flight crews is one of the biggest and most expensive problems
for any airline. Planners usually struggle to match thousands of flights while
complying to strict safety rules and trying to keep costs down. This study tackles
that exact problem by building a custom math programme from scratch using
MATLAB. Instead of guessing, a Binary Integer Linear Programming (BILP) model was
developed to automatically generate and select the cheapest legal crew pairings
under Indonesian CASR. The researcher tested the program on real flight data for
Garuda Indonesia's Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A330-300 fleets. Comparing the
results to older manual methods from previous student projects shows that this
new computer script is a good upgrade. It successfully cut operational costs by
nearly 27% for the Boeing fleet and about 20% for the Airbus. Even though the
computer struggled when building trips with more than three layovers, the final
math model proves that calculated programme beats hand-drawn schedules.
