PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is currently producing copper and gold ore mainly from the Grasberg open pit surface mine (Grasberg) and Deep Ore Zone mine (DOZ). PTFI is still in a progress of transition from open pit surface mine (Grasberg) to underground mine (UG). The Grasberg is scheduled for start depletion in 2018 and its total closure in 2019 whilst DOZ mine total closure in 2020. Consequently, in order to keep PTFI production profitability and continuity, PTFI has planned a call for replacement of Grasberg production with ore from other underground mine sources such as Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine. Deep Mill Level Zone Oreflow (DMLZ OF) maintenance group is one of groups within Concentrating Division PTFI who responsible in maintaining DMLZ equipment which transports ore delivery from DMLZ mine through the mill stockpile. DMLZ OF maintenance group has to deliver maintenance excellence services in order to support DMLZ mine operation success and keep PTFI production profitability and continuity. However, DMLZ OF maintenance group are currently still facing many problems with their performance in delivering excellent maintenance service to DMLZ mine operation group, the major problems are low equipment availability and increase maintenance cost. The problems led to low capacity production rate that resulting disruption of DMLZ mine ore production. The disruption of ore production causing the current production of DMLZ is not in line with the previous production forecast schedules, and will threaten the successful of Grasberg transition program. DMLZ OF Maintenance is currently do not have appropriate performance management system in place to measure their maintenance performance appropriately. The current traditional measurement used by the Oreflow DMLZ mechanical maintenance group is considered inadequate, as it only focuses & measures the performance variables of business output only such as equipment availability & safety accident rate, and it does not integrate to vision, mission, and strategy of the group. It can be concluded that ultimate root cause of problems is the lack of appropriate performance management system designed and inadequate key performance indicator implemented by the DMLZ OF Maintenance group in place to measure their maintenance performance. The DMLZ OF Maintenance group is most likely still unable to measure the performance appropriately and does not know how to measure its contribution to PTFI Company, particularly to DMLZ Mine operation and Grasberg transition program. In order to solve and optimize their current maintenance performance thoroughly, the needs of designing performance management system is essential for DMLZ OF maintenance group.
