This study develops a rule-based decision system for sand control method selection by integrating technical
screening and payout period evaluation. The system was applied to two offshore wells in the Talang Akar
Formation, Southeast Sumatra. The evaluated parameters include particle size distribution, fines content,
cementation, formation strength, critical sand-free rate, completion condition, well geometry, and
economics. Well X has a 101 ft perforated interval, while Well Y is a horizontal well evaluated using a 1018
ft completion cost basis. PSD analysis shows that Well X has UC of 4.07, SC of 12.21, and fines content of
7.76%, whereas Well Y has UC of 1.80, SC of 3.59, and fines content of 1.15%. Sanding risk is identified
in both wells because the liquid production rate exceeds the critical sand-free rate, with 571 bfpd versus
289.31 bfpd for Well X and 287 bfpd versus 246.4 bfpd for Well Y. The technical screening recommends
Polymer Sand Consolidation and Gravel Pack for Well X, while Standalone Screen and Gravel Pack are
applicable for Well Y. Chemical consolidation is excluded for Well Y due to horizontal geometry and
placement uncertainty. Economic evaluation shows that Well X has no payout due to its low oil rate of 16
BOPD. For Well Y, Standalone Screen gives the best result with a total cost of USD 304,000 and a payout
time of 0.29 years, compared with Gravel Pack at USD 31,812,500. and 10.1 years. The final result is sand
control installation is not economically justified for Well X, while Standalone Screen is selected as the most
optimal method for Well Y.
