Through electromyography (EMG), data regarding muscle activity can be recorded and used to study neuromuscular diseases. One common neuromuscular disease in Indonesia is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), which is located on the hand. This experiment ought to determine if the characteristics of the muscle strength on a person’s hand can be used to determine the difference of muscle activity between genders on a productive age. 10 males and 10 females, all belong to the productive age group (15 – 30 years old), are tasked to perform lifting a box with a specific movement. The movement requires them to pick up an object with a set height, and is to stay still for 5 seconds. All 20 participants are also to matched for all having no previous nor indicating having any musculoskeletal disorder on the hands. During the lifting, EMG will be placed on their first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle. The muscle activity will be recorded until the person regains their initial position. Each person’s muscle movement will be processed to find the RMS, maximum and mean value of the signal. Those data will then be compared between the genders. The result through observational analysis suggests that the male groups conducted in this experiment have higher muscle strength compared to the female group. However, a statistical analysis proves otherwise claiming that there is no significant difference between the two groups. Despite these differing results, numerous variables and suggestions could be considered to enhance the precision of the experiment’s results.
