The Pierre-Robin Sequence is a condition that can appear at birth where the lower jaw has not elongated sufficiently, forcing the tongue backwards and causing airway obstruction, which results in breathing and feeding issues for infants. The occurrence of the abnormal condition is relatively rare, only affecting up to 1 in 8000 childbirths. Distraction osteogenesis is a surgical technique involving a gradual separation of two bone surfaces, allowing the growth of a new bone to take place in between. Using this technique, it becomes possible to extend the mandible of children suffering from the Pierre-Robin sequence, providing leeway for the tongue. However, the device does not find its usage limited to children, as the distraction operation may also be performed on adults who may suffer from similar conditions. On the other hand, the stress that the device undergoes during operations on adults will differ from that of children’s, thus the device may require several changes in its design when used for adults. The finite element method will be used to simulate a design of a distractor for adults during operational use and determine the resulting stress. The results of the simulation on the design of distractor for adults show that under maximum adult biting force conditions, the resulting stress from the bite force will exceed the yield stress of the 316 Stainless Steel, the material chosen for this simulation, which has a reference yield stress of 489 MPa. The simulation was conducted on the ANSYS MECHANICAL APDL 2023 R1, using the ANSYS Workbench application.
