Although widely underestimated, indoor air pollution can significantly impact health negatively. Health facilities need clean air and satisfactory thermal conditions to provide patients and staff protection, medical equipment hygiene and promote patient recovery. Water droplets emitted from the mouth of a patient are the main source of pollutant in a dental clinic. This study focuses on understanding droplet dispersion characteristics and thermal comfort of a dental clinic using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
The CFD analysis consists of simulation domain modelling, mesh generation, setup, simulation, mesh independence study and finally analysis of the results. The simulation was conducted with 2 injection scenarios, the first being with a location of only in Room 1, and the second in both Room 1 and Room 2. The ventilation scenarios simulated the base ventilation, one with additional air purifiers and lastly with additional outlet vents.
The results show that the addition of air purifiers can reduce droplet concentrations by up to 3.84% in dentist planes, whereas the added outlet vents can reduce droplet concentrations by up to 22.43% in the waiting area & corridor plane. In Room 1, the PPD is reduced from 6.97% to 5.19% with the added air purifiers, meanwhile the added outlet vents can reduce PPD 5.01%. In Room 2, the PPD is increased from 5.04% to 5.62% with the added air purifiers, meanwhile the added outlet vents stay stable at 5.04%.
