Air travel is becoming an increasingly popular means of transportation in recent times. The cost varies to accommodate all class of passengers, from the luxury services of the first class through the minimum service of budget travelers. It is safe to claim that most socioeconomic classes can afford the cost of airline tickets. But in the recent years, the majority of passengers favor low-cost airline flights. A terminal that meets the needs of the airline is required to make the most of the low-cost carriers to satisfy airport, airline, and most importantly passengers. Unfortunately, there have never been any regulations regarding the standards of low-cost carrier terminals (LCCT), particularly in Indonesia. The aim of this undergraduate thesis is to develop the formulation of standards concept required in LCCT to fulfill its definition and objectives. Furthermore, this thesis will formulate the LCCT standards concept in accordance with the process and the selection of facilitation technology applied in the terminals.
It is found that benchmark airports use self-service technology to optimize passenger movement, a cost-cutting strategy commonly used by LCCT. Prominent examples are Self-check-in and self-baggage drops which regarded as the foundation the LCCT concept as both proved to have the ability improve passenger flow and significantly cut expenditures. Installing 40 self-service check-in counters at Soekarno-Hatta Airport's Terminal 2F could save $854,950 over five years, with a payback time of 21 months. Future research should explore the effectiveness of LCCT in reducing costs on all features and standard formulations, and also should examine the initiatives and their success in reducing handling/service costs per unit.
