The author was responsible for the team which developed the DUCT CADCAM system at the University of Cambridge and is a partner in the firm of Weber CAM CmbH, which programs for the pattem-and mould-making shop Firma August Weber Modellbau in Hildesheim, Germany. This article discusses why CADCAM is so little used in the mechanical engineering industry and why designers use CAD systems with little understanding of CAM. Until design and manufacturing directors have a common policy, progress will remain slow.
