FC Barcelona is one of the world's most popular football clubs, and its jersey serves not only as a symbol of the team but also as a crucial component of its business. Behind this popular product lies a long and complex supply chain involving FC Barcelona, Nike, and Barça Licensing & Merchandising, spanning the entire process from manufacturing to sales in over 170 countries. As sustainability becomes an increasingly significant concern within the textile and fashion industries, it is essential to understand the true extent of sustainability within this supply chain. This study employs the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, based on PRISMA 2020 guidelines, to examine the FC Barcelona jersey supply chain from a sustainability perspective. Thirty studies were reviewed and analyzed using the Triple Bottom Line framework, which encompasses environmental, social, and economic dimensions. The research aims to address three key questions: the extent to which FC Barcelona’s supply chain reflects sustainable supply chain principles; the associated environmental and social impacts; and the degree to which current initiatives foster transparency and stakeholder trust. The findings indicate that research on sustainable supply chains in the textile and apparel industries remains fragmented and rarely focuses on a specific product— such as a football jersey—as a comprehensive case study. Regarding FC Barcelona specifically, the study identifies several positive measures, including the use of 100% recycled polyester, a partnership with Plastiks.io on a blockchain-based plastic recovery program, and the use of QR codes to provide fans with additional information. However, compared to clubs such as Juventus and FC Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona demonstrates limited transparency, particularly concerning the reporting of labor conditions at its supplier factories. This suggests that the club is currently in a transitional phase between its sustainability ambitions and the demonstration of actual performance. Based on these findings, the study recommends that FC Barcelona establish its own sustainability KPIs, publish independent sustainability reports, conduct third-party labor audits, and develop tools such as Digital Product Passports and fan engagement platforms to build greater trust and support long-term sustainability within its jersey supply chain.
