Directional drilling is a common practice in offshore operations. It is employed to maximize potential while minimizing costs, given the limited access inherent to offshore environments and the higher expenses compared to conventional onshore wells. Well-X is an appraisal well currently in the planning stage for future development. The reservoir team has proposed a well profile designed to intersect a fault zone and a carbonate formation characterized by extensive natural fracturing. Encountering faults during drilling presents a significant challenge, as the fault itself and the surrounding area can create difficult conditions for the drilling process. Mud loss circulation due to faulting—compounded by the naturally fractured nature of the carbonate rock—increases the risk of fluid loss into the formation. This study examines the optimal design for Well-X, covering aspects such as trajectory, casing, drilling fluid and cementing programs, hydraulics, and rig selection. It also analyzes potential drilling hazards and introduces Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) as a method to safely control downhole events without increasing non-productive time.
