Basketball is currently one the most popular sports that exist in the world, with over 3 billion fans from around the world only second to football. As in the Olympics 2024, the men's basketball final was the most-watched category which peaked at 22.7 million viewers from across the globe.
There are a lot of skills and movements which incorporated within the sports. Running, jumping, dribbling, passing, and shooting the ball are examples of it. The objective in the basketball game is to score more points than the opposing team in a given period. To score the points, the players need to put the ball through the basket by means of shooting the ball. There are a few different types of shooting move in a basketball game such as layups, dunks, jump shots, and free throws. Free throws are the type of shooting move where the players shoot the basketball from a specific distance without any interference.
This experiment is focused on analyzing the motion of free throw shots using biomechanical methods and equipment. Optitrack optical motion capture system that utilizes a set of cameras in a controlled environment will be used for the data gathering part of the experiment. Several parameters of the free throw shooting motion will be analyzed and conducted on three group of subjects with different proficiency levels.
Using inverse kinematics from OpenSim software, the angles of each body parts that was created during the free throw motion occurred can be obtained. The data will then be compared, and conclusions can be taken which give insights into the effects of proficiency level to the motions created in the free throw shooting.
