The decline in natural gas production in a mature offshore field has made the company to investigate ways to optimize its energy usage. One technology that consumes a significant amount of power during the production process is the Electric Submersible Pump (ESP). It has been found that ESPs account for 13% of the total energy losses. This study aims to compare Induction Motors with Permanent Magnet Motors in ESPs and to examine the effects of the number of poles in Permanent Magnet Motors on system performance as an effort to improve energy efficiency in mature offshore fields in Indonesia. To achieve the objectives of this research, the implementation of Permanent Magnet Motors will be carried out on one of the wells in this field. Implementing Permanent Magnet Motors in the well “X” is projected to be implemented for all well in this field and will reduce total electrical energy consumption. Moreover, sensitivity is conducted in this study to see the influence of variables water cut, reservoir pressure, operating frequency, number of stages and number of pole permanent magnet motors on the liquid rate and efficiency system. The results show that implementing a permanent magnet motor can increase ESP system efficiency by 16.249% from the current design electrical submersible pump as a solution to declining natural gas production, a source of electrical energy in the offshore field. The results of this study are expected to be considered by stakeholders for assessing the feasibility of this transition for widespread use.
