The inadequate level of household solid waste management in Indonesia has brought about various problems such as the deterioration of natural environment, death of many people due to the waste slide tragedy at the final disposal site of, Leuwigajah, Cimahi Regency and conflicts between municipalities and the regency in managing the final disposal site and in seeking a new site for final disposal. This paper discusses first the household solid waste management in Indonesia, examining some aspects of solid waste management such as regulation, technical, institutional, financial and responsibility of stakeholders. Then, general overview of solid waste management in Japan follows. In addition, this paper also examines some practices of the household solid waste management in Yokohama City to see how Japanese local governments manage their waste. This research found that the stakeholder's role is critical for a successful implementation of household solid waste separation program. Without citizen awareness of the importance of separating waste according to ordinance, the Integrated Solid Waste Management does not work well. Furthermore, based on the analysis of Japan's experiences and the existing condition in Indonesia, this study suggests some recommendations.
