Mouthwash is an antiseptic product that reduces the microbes present in oral cavity. There is also number of people using Syzygium aromaticum infus as a home remedy to maintain their oral hygiene. Syzygium aromaticum which commonly known as clove has antimicrobial activity. The aim of this study is to determine the antimicrobial activity of different mouthwash against oral microbes and to compare the potency of Syzygium aromaticum infus with the most potent mouthwash in vitro. Mouthwashes labelled as A, B and C was used in this research. Syzygium aromaticum infus was prepared. Characterization of infus was done. Minimum inhibitory concentration of the mouthwashes and infus against microbe was determined by using microdilution method. Then antimicrobial screening was done by using disc diffusion method. Based on the result obtained, the most potent mouthwash was identified. A volunteer was asked to gargle sterile water. The mouthwash and Syzygium aromaticum infus was tested against the gargled water sample in vitro. The potency of mouthwash and infus in reducing the number of microbe was compared. E.coli and S.mutans is sensitive against mouthwash A and it shows medium and strong inhibition respectively. C.albicans is sensitive against mouthwash B and it shows strong inhibition. There is decrease in number of colony in both petri dish with mouthwash and infus. Mouthwash A with Chlorhexidine Digluconate found to be effective against Escherichia coli and Streptococcus mutans where the MIC shown was 0.0023 ?g/mL against Escherichia coli and 1.06x10 -4 ?g/mL against Streptococcus mutans. Mouthwash B with the active ingredient Cetylpyridium Chloride has high activity against Candida albicans with MIC 3.6x10 -4 ?g/mL. When comparing the potency of mouthwash A with infus in vitro mouthwash A has 2.3 times higher potency than Syzygium aromaticum infus in reducing number of bacteria.
