Carl Einstein's writing on modern art is to a large extent defined by his encounter with Cubism. Although not mentioned by name, Cubism informed his early theoretical essay "Totality" (a draft of the first section of the text was originally titled "Picasso"), and his Negro Sculpture (1915).
