acebiometricshaveattractedsignificantattentionasatechnologyforsecureaccesstomobiledevices.ThisisbecausealmostallsmartphoneshaveRGBcamerassuitableforcapturingfaces,andtherequireduserinteractionisacceptablegiventhepopularityof‘selfies’.Mostofthetraditionalmethodsforfacebiometricsmaynotbeamenabletona-tiveexecutiononmobilehardwareduetotheirlimitedmemoryandcomputingpower.Consequently,anumberofalgorithmsspecificallydesignedoradaptedtothemobileen-vironmenthavebeenproposedforfacebiometrics.However,thestate-of-the-artrelatedtofacebiometricsinamobileenvironmentisnotwellknown.Thispaperthoroughlyandcriticallysurveysfacebiometricsintermsoffacedetectionandnormalization,recognition,andanti-spoofingmethodsproposedformobiledevices.Theoverallaimistoimproveun-derstandinganddiscusstheadvantagesandlimitationsoftheexistingmethods.Further,challengesandfutureresearchdirectionsareidentifiedforfurtherresearchanddevelop-ment.
