Despite extensive research on what drives employee green behavior (EGB), there has been a notable gap in understanding these dynamics within the historically less sustainable coal mining sector. This study aimed to explore how factors from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the Value-Identity-Personal Norm (VIP) model, and green human resource management (GHRM) practices influence EGB. Starting with an exploratory approach involving a thorough literature review and qualitative data collection, including interviews within a leading coal mining company, the study developed a conceptual model. Gathering quantitative data from 432 participants working in both coal mining companies and mining contractors in Indonesia, the analysis utilized NVivo and Smart PLS to examine and validate the proposed relationships. This research contributes in several ways: it enhances our understanding of GHRM practices, addresses the dearth of EGB research in coal mining, and introduces EGB as an outcome of GHRM while exploring the roles of organizational identification and psychological capital. This study sheds light on the complex interaction between human behavior, organizational strategies, and sustainability in the coal mining industry, offering insights valuable for both theoretical advancement and practical application.
