Keyword : Embankment

An embankment placed on soft soil will settle until an ultimate level of settlement consistent with embankment loading is reached. The time required to achieve ultimate settlement can be shortened by placing a surcharge on the embankment, when ultimate settlement is reached the surcharge is removed to prevent further settlement. A procedure to determine the height of embankment surcharge needed has been proposed by Lea and Branner (1959). On the ITB-STJR programme, research has been underway for many years on modelling the settlement of embankments placed on soft soil.
The KON2-D (KONsolidasi 2-Dimensi) computer programme, developed by Nangoi (1987), uses finite difference numerical analysis and is based on the Terzaghi-Rendulic theory with stage loading. This program was further developed by Riyanto (1988), Tanjiria (1991), Suaryana (1992) and Harianti (1994). In the research described in this thesis The KON2-D programme was modified to enable the height of embankment surcharge to be calculated by an iterative procedure.
The modified programme is called KON2D-DSN (KONsolidasi 2-Dimensi for DeSigN). To test the programme, the embankment constructed on a 30 meter deep compressible layer at Sta. 37+045 on the Padalarang-Cileunyi Toll Road was selected as a case study. The most recent version of KON2-D, Harianti 1994 (KON2D-ANT) was used to determine the time to reach 97 % consolidation. Correcting the coefficient of consolidation as recommended by Harianti, the time was estimated to be 1500 days.
The final height of embankment above existing ground level is 2.0 meter. The KON2D-DSN programme output indicates that this can be achieved by preloading for 180 days with an embankment of height 2.56 meter and an embankment surcharge of 2.44 meter. This result is some what different from the original design where the height of embankment was 3.00 meter and the embankment surcharge height was 2.00 meter.
The height of embankment surcharge and the time of preloading depends on the dissipation of the excess pore pressure. Dissipation of the excess pore pressure can be accelerated by increasing the height of embankment surcharge or using vertical drains.
