The convenient of sending email through Internet Network and its speed have been reliazed by part of scientific and business community in Indonesia. The vunerability of email security had been overlooked by most of email users. Sending a news or mail through email is equivalent to sending a text written on postcard, i.e. a letter without sealed envelope, through courier or post office. Actually, email can be read, the content can be altered, the sender can be altered or the sending date can be altered on the way between original sender and intended recipient.
Secure email has to have secure characteristic like an ordinary letter with closed envelope with date and sender’s signature as well as recipient and sender’s address. Secure email has to give a certain secure protection characteristic such as privacy, integrity of the content, and authentication of date and sender.
Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) had been popular Secure Email software that has those three protections. It uses combination of symmetric key crypto and asymmetric crypto algorithm. The combination of both algorithms makes the PGP have relatively high security level with different random session key for its high-speed symmetric crypto algorithm and use asymmetric crypto algorithm for its key exchange and digital signature.
The all software implementation of PGP Secure Email have several pitfalls. The key generation on computer main board, the key management on computer hard disk and also usability of phasefrase are several weak security points of software PGP Secure Email. These weak security points can be significantly improved with special hardware Secure Email. The implementation will have problem on key generation as well as key storage and also more user friendly if the smart card is used for key storage
