Penyakit infeksi masih merupakan penyakit yang sering melanda masyarakat Indonesia dan negara berkembang lainnya. Akan tetapi banyak mikroba yang menjadi resisten terhadap antibiotik yang ada. Berdasarkan penggunaan tradisional, khususnya sebagai antimikroba maka dilakukan uji aktivitas antimikroba pada ekstrak etanol dan minyak atsiri beberapa tumbuhan suku Lamiaceae terhadap mikroba uji dari kelompok bakteri dan fungi. Hal ini dilakukan sebagai usaha verifikasi kebenaran penggunaan dalam pengobatan tradisional. Uji aktivitas antimikroba dilakukan secara in vitro dengan metode difusi agar pada cakram kertas terhadap mikroba Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, dan Microsporum gypseum. Tujuh macam ekstrak etanol memberikan hambatan pada Escherichia coli. Hambatan paling besar diberikan oleh ekstrak etanol simplisia tanaman Mentha merdinah Back. Ex Ochse & Bakh. Minyak atsiri dari Ocimum basillicum L. dan Pogostemon cablin Benth. aktif terhadap kelima mikroba dengan aktivitas paling kuat diberikan oleh minyak basil terhadap Aspergillus niger dan Microsporum gypseum. Tumbuhan suku Lamiaceae terutama minyak atsirinya terbukti memiliki aktivitas antimikroba dan berpotensi untuk dikembangkan.

Infection disease is still a common disease that occurs in Indonesia and many others developing country. However many microbes have became resistant to common antibiotics. Based on traditional uses especially as an antimicrobial therefore a research of antimicrobial activity from some ethanol extracts and volatile oil of Lamiaceae family plants was conducted against test microbe from bacteria and fungi group. This was conducted as an attempt to verify of the usage in traditional medication. The in vitro test of antimicrobial activity was done by agar diffusion method on paper disc against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, and Microsporum gypseum. Seven ethanol extracts were active against Escherichia coli. The biggest activity was given by extract of Mentha merdinah Back. Ex Ochse & Bakh herb. The volatile oil of Ocimum basillicum L. and Pogostemon cablin Benth. were active against five microbes, with the most potent activity was given by basil oil against Aspergillus niger and Microsporum gypseum. Antimicrobial activity of Lamiaceae family plants especially their volatile oils have been proven and have a potential to be developed.
