Proses rendering pada teknologi media digital dan game khususnya industri film animasi membutuhkan sumber daya besar dan waktu yang cukup banyak. Penggunaan cluster computing untuk melakukan proses rendering merupakan solusi untuk permasalahan ini, tetapi dalam implementasinya terdapat isu manajemen, pemeliharaan, dan penggunaan sumber daya sehingga dibutuhkan sebuah "ilusi" atau view yang seragam, transparan, dan koheren terhadap cluster agar menjadi satu sistem (single system image).

Tesis ini mencoba menjadi solusi permasalahan tersebut dengan pengembangan Render Farm yang relatif scalable berbasis sistem operasi Single System Image (SSI) Linux/Kerrighed, perangkat keras Commodity Off-The-Self (COTS), dan perangkat lunak bebas pendukung cluster SSI, serta studi kasus pada rendering engine Blender dengan dua tipe rendering terdistribusi coarse-grained dan finegrained pada beberapa konfigurasi node-node.

Deskripsi Alternatif :

Rendering process in digital media and game technology, specifically animation film industry, needs huge resources and time. The use of cluster computing to optimize it is the solution for this problem, but there are arised issues such as global resource management, maintainance, and use in its implementation. Thus, the need for unified, transparent, and coherent "illusion" or view of cluster as a single system image is important.

This thesis attempts to solve the problem with the development of relatively scalable Render Farm using Single System Image (SSI) based on Linux/Kerrighed operating system over Commodity Off-The-Self (COTS) hardware and freesoftware which supporting SSI cluster, with case study on Blender rendering engine, two distributed rendering approach: coarse-grained and fine-grained, and some node configurations.
