Air yang terkontaminasi ion logam berat merupakan masalah yang signifikan bagi makhluk hidup. Ion Pb(II) merupakan ion logam berat yang bersifat racun. Adsorpsi adalah salah satu metode untuk menghilangkan ion logam berat dalam air. Alginat adalah komponen struktural dari dinding sel alga yang dapat bertindak sebagai adsorben untuk ion-ion logam. Pada penelitian ini, adsorben dibuat menggunakan enkapsulasi karbon aktif pada kalsium alginat (CaA-KA) untuk mengadsorpsi ion Pb(II) dalam larutan. Karakterisasi adsorben CaA-KA dilakukan dengan menggunakan analisis Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) dan Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Penentuan kondisi optimum proses adsorpsi dilakukan melalui variasi berbagai parameter, yaitu komposisi adsorben, pH larutan, massa adsorben, dan waktu kontak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa komposisi optimum dicapai pada perbandingan kalsium alginat dengan karbon aktif adalah 4:1 (w/w) dengan pH optimum adsorpsi pada pH 4, massa adsorben 0,1 gram, dan waktu kontak 120 menit. Proses adsorpsi ion Pb(II) oleh adsorben CaA-KA mengikuti model isoterm adsorpsi Langmuir dengan kapasitas adsorpsi maksimum 136,99 mg g-1 pada suhu 25 °C. Hasil studi kinetika menunjukkan adsorpsi ion Pb(II) mengikuti model kinetika orde dua semu. Proses adsorpsi berlangsung secara endotermik dengan nilai ΔGᵒ(25˚C) = 9,78 kJ mol-1, Gᵒ(40˚C) = 7,51 kJ mol-1, ΔGᵒ(55˚C)= 5,23 kJ mol-1, Hᵒ = 54,96 kJ mol-1, dan nilai Sᵒ = 1,52x10-1 kJ mol-1K-1.

Water contaminant by heavy metal ions is a significant problem for living things. Pb(II) ion is a toxic heavy metal ion. Adsorption is one method to remove heavy metal ions in water. Alginate is a structural component of alga cell wall that can act as an adsorbent of metal ions. In this research, the adsorbent was prepared by using encapsulation activated carbon in calcium alginate (CaA-KA) to adsorb Pb(II) ions in solution. The characterization of CaA-KA adsorbents was carried out using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The determination of the optimum conditions of the adsorption process is carried out by varying several parameters, such as adsorbent composition, pH of the solution, mass of the adsorbent, and contact time. The research results showed that the optimum composition was achieved on the ratio of calcium alginate with activated carbon was 4:1 (w/w) with optimum pH of adsorption at pH 4, 0,1 gram adsorbent mass, and 120 minutes contact time. The adsorption process of Pb(II) ion by CaA-KA adsorbent followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 136,99 mg g-1 at 25 °C. The results of kinetic studies showed that the adsorption of Pb(II) ions followed a pseudo second order kinetics model. The adsorption process took place endothermically with the value of ΔGᵒ(25 ˚C) = 9,78 kJ mol-1, ΔGᵒ(40 ˚C) = 7,51 kJ mol-1, Gᵒ(55 ˚C) = 5,23 kJ mol-1, Hᵒ = 54,96 kJ mol-1, and the value of Sᵒ = 1,52x10-1 kJ mol-1K-1.
