Stainless steel merupakan logam campuran mengandung unsur utama besi, 70% berat kromium minimal sebesar 10,5% berat. Dalam penggunaannya, terkadang stainless steel mengalami kontak dengan air. Sifat hidrofilik stainless steel menahan air untuk tetap menempel pada permukaan, dan dalam waktu yang lama mendorong terjadinya proses korosi. Untuk mengurangi kemungkinan


terbentuknya korosi, permukaan stainless steel dapat dimodifikasi dengan pelapisan yang tahan penetrasi air. Salah satunya menggunakan lapisan kimiawi bersifat superhidofobik. Dalam penelitian tugas akhir ini dilakukan pelapisan hidrofobik Al-stearat dan Zn-stearat menggunakan metoda deposisi elektrokimia. Lempengan aluminium dan seng dipasang sebagai anoda, dan stainless steel sebagai katoda. Larutan elektrolit digunakan asam stearat, konsentrasi divariasikan dari 5 mM hingga 40


mM. Sumber daya listrik digunakan baterai 4,5 Volt dan arus 0,58 Ampere. Waktu deposisi elektrokimia divariasikan dari 1 – 5 jam. Permukaan hasil deposisi elektrokimia dikarakterisasi menggunakan Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), dilengkapi Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), dan uji sudut kontak tetesan air


volume 5 L pada permukaan sampel. Sudut kontak maksimum diperoleh sebesar 153,7o untuk pelapisan aluminium dan 155,7o untuk pelapisan seng, dengan kondisi proses pelapisan yang sama menggunakan larutan asam stearat 10 mM dideposisi pada temperatur ruang


selama 4 jam.

Deskripsi Alternatif :

Stainless steel contains iron as a major element (70 wt.%) and chrome of 10.5 wt.%. In most practical applications stainless steel often in direct contact with water or steam, triggering corrosion on stainless steel surface. There are many available solutions to prevent corrosion by covering the stainless steel surface using substances that impenetrable by water. In this work we introduce a superhydrophobic thin film to retain dryness of the stainless steel surface. In this final project we deposit a hydrophobic layer on stainless steel using electrochemical deposition method. Al or Zn was employed as a anode, whilst stainless steel was set as working electrode. Stearic acid solution was used as electrolyte, and its concentration was varied from 5 mM to 40 mM. Battery of 4.5 Volt with constant current flow of 0.58 Ampere was connected to the circuit. The electrodeposition process was carried out at room temperature for various durations from 1 h to 5 h. The sample surface were characterized using Scanning


Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and static contact angle measurement with 5 L water drop. The results show that hydrophobic layer on stainless steel produce maximum


static contact angle of 153.7o and 155.7o for aluminum and zinc coated stainless steel, respectively. Both resulted from electrochemical deposition process using


10 mM stearic acid solution in room temperature for 4 hours.
