ABSTRAK:


Seiring dengan menipisnya cadangan bahan bakar berbasis minyak bumi, maka usaha untuk mendapatkan sumber bahan bakar bare mendapat perhatian besar. Banyak alternatif sumber energi yang telah diteliti, salah satunya adalah biodiesel. Biodiesel menjadi favorit bahan bakar alternatif karena kelebihannya dibanding bahan bakar alternatif lain, yaitu sifat fisiknya yang mirip dengan solar, Biodiesel ramah lingkungan serta terbarukan karena terbuat dari sumber daya hayati.


Biodiesel yang berupa ester metil diperoleh dari trigliserida minyak nabati melalui proses transesterifikasi. Proses dilakukan dengan mereaksikan minyak nabati dan alkohol (metanol) serta diberi katalis, kemudian akan menghasilkan ester yang sifat fisiknya mirip dengan minyak solar. Air limbah dihasilkan dari proses pencucian produk ester metil. Air limbah yang dihasilkan memiliki kandungan organik yang cukup tinggi. Air limbah dengan kandungan organik yang tinggi dapat ditangani dengan proses aerob maupun dengan proses anaerob. Namur proses anaerob lebih menguntungkan dibandingkan dengan proses aerob.


Penelitian bertujuan mengkaji kemampuan proses anaerob dalam mengolah air limbah industri biodiesel. Kinerja proses anaerob ditentukan menggunakan uji potensi metana biokimia atau BMP (Biochemical Methane Potential) dan uji tingkat racun atau ATA ( Anaerobic Toxicity Assay).


Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa air limbah biodiesel dapat terdegradasi oleh mikroorganisme pada proses anaerob. Air limbah biodiesel mudah terbiodegradasi dan tidak bersifat racun. Hasil ini menunjukkan proses anaerob mampu mengolah air limbah industri biodiesel.

Along with the decrease of fossil fuel reserves, the effort to get alternative fuel has a special attention. There are many alternative fuel have been investigated, one of them is biodiesel. Biodiesel becomes a favorite alternative fuel because of its advantages than others having similar physical properties with the automotive diesel oil.


Biodiesel is an environmental friendly and renewalable, because it made from natural resources. Biodiesel is methyl ester that obtained from triglyceride of vegetable oils via transesterification process. This process do by reaction that involved vegetable oils with alcohol (methanol) and catalyst, then will obtain ester that its properties just like diesel oil. Biodiesel wastewater from the methyl ester wash process has very high organic pollutant. Wastewater containing very high organic pollutant can be treated by mean of aerobic or anaerobic processes. However, the anaerobic process has several advantages over aerobic process.


In this study, the ability of anaerobic process to treat biodiesel wastewater was investigated. Bioassay for monitoring biochemical methane potential and anaerobic toxicity was used to evaluate the anaerobic process performance. The study shows that the biodiesel wastewater could be degraded by the microorganisms in the anaerobic process.


Biodiesel wastewater was a readily biodegradable and it was not toxic to the anaerobic biomass. The results show that the anaerobic process was capable to treat biodiesel wastewater.
